TifAni FaNelli and Olivia Kaplan: rivalry, estrangement, and social exclusion

Luckiest Girl Alive

TifAni FaNelli and Olivia Kaplan’s relationship is a fragile alliance formed inside Bradley’s social hierarchy, where friendship, attraction, and reputation compete for space. Olivia’s interest in Liam and her ties to Dean place pressure on the connection; after Dean’s party, TifAni tries to preserve her standing with Olivia even as her own experience and the group’s treatment of her deepen the distance between them.

An Alliance at Bradley

At The Bradley School, Olivia occupies a position of social influence, and TifAni’s place among the students is partly secured through her connections to Olivia and Hilary. Their association offers TifAni something more durable than attention from a boy, though it does not make her secure: she is tolerated at lunch, and she understands that the group’s welcome can be withdrawn.

The friendship is also shaped by competition over Liam. Olivia has made clear that she wants him, and TifAni recognizes that her own involvement with him has caused friction. When Olivia asks about Dean’s party, TifAni senses that Olivia’s bright manner conceals her displeasure that TifAni was invited without telling her and had been involved with Liam. TifAni answers uncertainly rather than claiming the encounter was enjoyable, and Olivia’s rapid blinking makes the friendliness seem performed.

TifAni eventually decides not to fight Olivia for Liam. She weighs the brief possibility of a relationship with him against the longer-term value of keeping Olivia and Hilary as friends. That decision shows how carefully she calculates belonging: she can step aside from a romantic contest, but the choice is also a bid to retain a place in the group.

Liam and the Limits of Loyalty

The triangle does not end with TifAni’s decision. She asks Liam to accompany her to get the Morning-after pill, an act she recalls as unusually direct for someone who finds it difficult to ask for what she wants. His later written reminder that they are friends makes her feel the limits of the intimacy she had hoped for. Meanwhile, she sees Liam beginning to appreciate Olivia’s appearance differently. TifAni does not interfere, treating her withdrawal as sincere rather than as a maneuver to regain him.

Olivia’s eventual response suggests that she needs time to believe that retreat. Nearly three weeks after Dean’s party, she remarks on how thin TifAni looks, in a tone TifAni experiences as accusatory rather than complimentary. TifAni attributes the change to cross-country running, but remembers that since the party she could stomach little beyond cantaloupe and that her running performance had worsened. The exchange leaves the friendship entangled with a visible change in TifAni that she does not disclose to Olivia.

Dean’s Influence and the Break in Trust

After an incident at Olivia’s house, TifAni approaches Olivia with the immediate aim of apologizing and recovering her favor. She believes that Olivia will follow Dean’s lead, so repairing the connection with Olivia seems inseparable from staying on good terms with him. TifAni apologizes for the Saturday incident and repeats Dean’s explanation that drinking and smoking had made her behave badly. Her effort to appease Olivia shows how the group’s relationships are arranged around Dean’s influence, rather than resting on independent trust between the two girls.

Olivia has a bruise at the corner of her mouth. TifAni admits that her first reaction is not simply concern about what may have happened to Olivia: she is also frightened that the injury will ruin her own position. When Olivia notices the cut on TifAni’s cheek and says that they are twins, the remark links their visible injuries without resolving what either girl understands about the other’s circumstances. TifAni remembers Olivia’s detached smile long afterward. The moment offers a bleak form of recognition, but not an evident reconciliation.

Exclusion and the Remembered Relationship

The school’s hostility toward TifAni becomes explicit when her cross-country practice shorts are displayed on a bulletin board beneath a degrading sign. She remembers that Olivia and Hilary had acted unusually kind in the locker room the previous day and suspects that this change may have been connected to the missing shorts. The account does not establish who put them there, so Olivia’s responsibility remains uncertain; what it does show is TifAni’s loss of trust and her sense that friendliness may have preceded a public humiliation.

In the bathroom afterward, TifAni overhears girls debating the treatment of her and Ben, with one girl treating TifAni as responsible for what had happened to her while distinguishing her from Ben, who could not help being gay. The exchange exposes a school culture in which harm is judged through stigma and blame. Olivia is not identified as one of the speakers, but the episode clarifies the social world in which her alliance with TifAni has become precarious.

The relationship is therefore remembered less as a settled friendship than as a series of negotiations over access, loyalty, and credibility. TifAni’s later narration returns to these moments while recounting the party and its aftermath, but the evidence does not show an adult reunion or a repaired bond with Olivia. What remains is the contrast between TifAni’s early willingness to give Olivia what she needed and her later uncertainty about whether Olivia’s kindness could be trusted.
